A Shop That Grew From the Ground Up
Root & Reason is powered by Garforth Greengrocers — a one-year-old independent shop on a Yorkshire high street that has already become the beating heart of its community.
A High Street That Needed a Hero
Garforth is a market town on the eastern edge of Leeds — a community of families, workers, and neighbours who know each other by name. Like so many Yorkshire high streets, it had watched independent shops disappear one by one, replaced by empty units and chain stores that felt like they belonged nowhere in particular.
Then, in 2024, a door opened at 22 Main Street. A proper greengrocer and deli — the kind of place that smells of fresh produce and warm pastry, where the staff know your order before you've finished asking.

More Than a Shop — A Community Hub
Within weeks of opening, something remarkable happened. People didn't just come to buy vegetables — they came to talk, to linger, to reconnect with the idea that food should be fresh, local, and bought from someone who cares.
The deli counter filled up with award-winning pork pies, scotch eggs, and quiches. Coffee appeared. Freshly made sandwiches. Grazing boards for celebrations. An outdoor seating area surrounded by plants and flowers. The shop became a destination — not just a stop.

Seasonal, locally sourced produce — the same ingredients that go into every Bio-Box.
The Question That Started Everything
As the shop grew, a question kept surfacing: what if the produce we sell could do even more? What if there was a way to unlock the full nutritional potential of the vegetables already in people's kitchens — not through supplements or powders, but through a simple, ancient, science-backed technique?
The answer was mustard seed. Research showed that adding a small amount of mustard seed powder to cruciferous vegetables — broccoli, kale, cauliflower — could increase the bioavailability of sulforaphane by up to 400%. Not a supplement. Not a superfood trend. Just a seed, and the science to explain why it works.

The Community
Every subscription supports the shop on Main Street, Garforth — the people, the suppliers, and the high street that made all of this possible.
Root & Reason is the digital expression of everything the shop stands for — quality, knowledge, community, and the belief that eating well should be accessible, joyful, and grounded in real science. One year in, the roots are deep. The reason is clear.
